Equus Medendi

Equine Assisted Learning and Therapy

 Mission Statement

As the words of our charity demonstrate, Equus Medendi, (Equus, Latin for horse, Medendi, for healing) the basic mission is healing with horses. Equus Medendi’s mission is to create an environment that uses horses and a caring team of professionals to provide supplemental and alternative treatment to those that have been diagnosed with conditions that benefit from psychotherapy as well as those who seek to improve their lives through experiential learning and coaching in a natural environment.

What is equine therapy?

“There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.”
— Winston Churchill

Equine Assisted Learning and Therapy addresses a variety of behavioral issues that affect our community. It has proven to be effective in providing help with common issues that are prevalent in our society and specially among our youth.
Majority of the work we have done throughout our community has been directed towards at-risk and underprivileged kids as well as our transitional age and foster care youth with a minimum age requirement of 10 years old.
Some of the more common issues that we address during sessions are alcohol and drug use, anger, self-esteem issues, communication and relationship problems, anxiety, and depression. Our goal is to improve social skills, trust, leadership skills, self-reliance and confidence.
This alternative, innovative and short term approach has proven to be very effective because it is action focused and hands-on rather than traditional therapies that often require the child to open up and disclose information that they might not be ready to share with another human being. During Equine Assisted Therapy, most of the communication is non-verbal between the horse and the client and therefore incapable of deception or judgement. It becomes impossible to “fake” or “manipulate” a conversation or an outcome, making every session genuine and highly transparent. This can then be processed by the client with the help of trauma expert and therapist without pressure or predetermined expectations.
