Why Horses?
The unique nature of the horse is what makes the therapy so successful. The horse doesn’t lie or deceive. As the horse builds trust it connects with the person. This quite often provides the client with a feeling of comfort and the opportunity to break down barriers and address the challenges they have been facing. Horses are large, powerful, and naturally intimidating to many. This creates an inherent opportunity for some to overcome fear and develop confidence. Working alongside a horse, in spite of those fears, creates confidence and provides powerful insight when dealing with other intimidating and challenging situations in life. Horses are dynamic, powerful, curious, social and highly sensitive living beings. By utilizing these characteristics this therapy has proven to be highly effective. Like humans, horses have distinct personalities, attitudes and moods. Horses provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning.
Trauma Recovery
All sessions are led by an Equine Specialist, a Mental Health Professional, one or more horses, and are ground based (no riding). The program consists of an orientation and 6 weekly small group or individual sessions which meet for 1 to 2 hours each, depending on the needs of the group or the individual. These initial sessions include:
- Learning how to communicate and interact with the horse.
- Increasing self-awareness of one’s own emotional state,
- Increasing self-awareness of one’s body language
- Focusing on how one relates to others.
Most of our participants have had little or no prior exposure to horses and are often doubtful about what they can accomplish with them. However, by the end of our program, our clients have long overcome their initial fears; they have bonded with one or more horses, feel good about what they have achieved as an individual and as a group and typically experience a clinically measurable reduction of troublesome symptoms. Follow up group meetings are held every couple of months and give participants a chance to come back and visit.
